7 Things you don’t Know About Your Cosmetics
It is sad but amazing how many ingredients and beauty products that are banned in Europe are just okay in United States. Now I’m not taking sides here, but life is life irrespective of region.
In order for readers to understand what I mean, I’ll just share a few points that will help spread my point across.
1. No Real Federal Regulations
FDA isn’t very keen on testing the ingredients because they don’t qualify as drugs. Pretty much everything from parabens, octinoxate and carcirogen is usable in United States. The only thing FDA monitors is that the ingredients aren’t adulterated but that doesn’t help much.
2. Testing Isn’t a Requirement in the US
FDA lacks any real power over the manufacturers and so only advices manufacturers to “work with a consultant” if they are short of expertise to judge pure from contaminated.
3. Untested Products
Keeping the above in mind, here is a fact. Nearly 4 out of every 5 ingredients used in beauty products are untested.
4. Fragrance as a Scapegoat
Oftentimes, manufacturers will just conceal the doubtful ingredients under the fragrance’s tab. Natural oils for fragrance may be beneficial but classifying chemicals along with natural oils and ingredients has worked for these cosmetic makers thus far.
5. Organic probably doesn\'t mean what you think it means.
As long as FDA thinks the product and its ingredients aren’t misleading, they are all okay. Even the USDA’s organic logo can be no guarantee because your product may be organic, only because it has 3% natural extracts.
6. Animal Testing
FDA doesn’t have any proper, legal definition for the term “not tested on animals.”
7. American Products Can Have More Than 500 Ingredients
How much of these are, or can be considered natural, especially after what you’ve read?
While Europe has banned more than a thousand products and ingredients, FDA feels Americans are safer since they have banned 8 harmful products. That’s right, eight. So what do you think FDA should do to tackle these issues?
